What is Make-Up Made Of?

Castor oil is found in many cosmetics as it is a non-comedogen i.e it does not cause acne or aggravate it.
Cerebrosides (cells from cattle or swine nervous systems) used to be used in expensive, high-end skin-care cosmetics as they increased moisture retention and created a smooth surface of the skin. However because of BSE this is no longer used.

FOUNDATION:
Foundation used to be made from Animal fat, Starch and Tin Oxide but today it contain over 30 different ingredients including water, oil, alcohol, and colourant.

LIPSTICK:
Lipstick has been used for around 5000 years. In ancient Babylon precious jewels were crushed and then put on the lips and sometimes around the eyes. In Ancient Egypt they crushed fucus-algin and got a purpley-red dye that they then mixed with iodine and bromine mannite which caused serious illness. Cleopatra's lipstick was made from crushed carmine beetles for a deep red pigment and ants were used for the base.
Today the red colour in lipstick comes from pure iron-oxide. It is then mixed with castor oil and a wax.
